Agents are paid to collect and guarantee player funds. But aren't they also paid to deliver those funds to the book in a TIMELY manner, each and every week?

Is it a mistake to deduct from an agent's percentage if they do not deliver by the assigned settle up day?

Please discuss...

hey lowroller,
Yes, they are paid to do such a serivce as you've mentioned, however they book or service might be charging a fee for late payments, charging for a transfer fee or some other fee that might be charged to the agent. Reconnection fee or something like that. What I suggest you do is, contact the agent or the company you're doing business with, to find out about the charge.

is that right!

My question revolves around agents that make payments to me. They have been getting slower and slower....should I dock their "cut"?

I've never heard of anything like this, but I don't think I should be paying "full price" for slow payments.

Would it be acceptable? How much? Right now they are getting 20%.

OK,
Glad we cleared that up.

for late fees and reconnection fees depending on how late they are with their payments. I would charge a flat fee rather than a %, sounds fair. If you need to turn a package off than a reconnection fee for late payments, and another flat fee. Especially during baseball season is not a good time to try to collect a piece of a losing agent. Flat well communicated fees might work better.

is that right!

I agree - baseball is a bad time. I would say it depends on the situation. Is the agent just not paying in full - if so what % is missing? If it is a no payment on the expected date what is the reason the agent gives?

You need to think about how important the agent is to your business as well. Cutting off a package should be the last resort, although it maybe necessary.

As for reconnection fees - don't count on it. If you cut off a package and they want to come back and you lay that on them the agent might just try to take them somewhere else.

This is a player/agent. Nothing sophisticated. He has a group of players that he works with in a factory...does the p & c, and picks up a percentage for the effort.

However, the payments have been coming later and later. Payday was Tuesday...that turned into Friday...now we're looking at Monday (almost an entire week late). Not every week mind you, but enough that I am noticing.

The thing that pisses me off is that agents get paid "first". They take their percentage off the top. I don't think it's right that I am getting stalled by someone who gets paid before I do. I DO NOT MIND paying for action. But my thinking is that I am paying every bit of that percentage for 3 things:

1. Action
2. Guarantee of player funds
3. Timely payment

If I am not getting those 3 then I am beginning to think that the percentage should be changed.

I agree that now is a bad time to make changes, but I am thinking about getting ready for football. I think any changes should be made before September so there is no confusion once the busy season starts.

I need help/input!

OK Judge,

The agent relationship is a couple of years old...the player relationship is about twice that. Nice guy, and we are friendly with each other.

However, I think that this is part of the problem. Players and/or agents seem to think that because you have a decent/friendly relationship, and the fact that they have paid you a decent amount of $ in the past, that this gives THEM alot more freedom with MY $.

The sheet is above average in profitability...lots of square action. But does profitability really dictate the terms of the relationship? Like I said, if I keep saying "no problem" to Friday...that turns into "no problem" on Monday...then what happens next?! It seems to me that the more you try to accomadate the player/agent, the more trouble you can ultimately get yourself into! I am getting the feeling that my generosity is being taken advantage of, and a line needs to be drawn.

I am looking to set some standards that can be smoothly implimented with existing agents and applied to new ones I am looking at taking on this fall.

That being said, first and foremost I want to be fair.

If you don't feel you're getting the kind of service that you're paying for, then I say sure work it out to maybe 15 points. However, what's to keep this guy coming back if the going rate is 20 points. To me, it sounds like it's a very delicate situation. Late fees are known, cutting points off the top are dangerous.

is that right!

Darwin I have never heard of late fees. Maybe its because you are a pro-shop and that is more common at your level. I am just a local trying to grow/protect my business.

Another local I know does not have the problem I do but suggested using 2 percentages...one for "on time" another for "late". Pretty simple.

I really didn't want to spoon-feed any suggestions, but nobody really seems to be forthcoming with any.

Believe me, I would rather NOT have to deal with this. But I am getting tired of HAVING to deal with the alternative of doing/saying nothing!

Low,I would probably not press the issue too hard. You don't want to lose what sounds like a good sheet. However you should impress upon him, they if he gets too far behind you will have to shut his guys out.And tell him you always pay on the established day and all you are doing is asking for the same courtesy.

Mr. Lowroller
I feel your pain..Slow agents this time of year are not unusual, and lately more realistic..The credit world is getting tougher everyday to manage..If the package is profitable you must stick with it and when high season comes hope for the best..$ is tough to collect these days..I live and manage my business offshore..In CR I feel like I am living in Fantasyland..During the war if not for TV I would not even know there is a world dispute going on in the middle east..My friends tell me things in the states are harder than ever.
Agents and books alike must be careful with new customers..People guaranteeing other people is not foolproof..
My grandfather used to say.."You live in hope, and die in despair"..The trademark of the credit biz..
I AM NOT SAYIN, I AM JUST SAYIN
